Volunteers in Action

Volunteer Story: Carol & Rich

When my husband and I retired nearly 2 years ago, our three children were grown and on their own and for the first time in our married life, we had the time to become committed volunteers. The New Hampshire Association for the Blind shared our commitment to serve people who are visually impaired and we found the organization to be welcoming, well-organized and flexible.

From the beginning we were willing to assist in any way we could and following our volunteer training we have enjoyed wearing many hats. We have done clerical work, volunteered at the Art Show, Portsmouth which featured art work people who are blind and visually impaired could access, the Blind Awareness Walk-A-Thon in Concord, driven clients to the Lions Winter Outing in Northwood and to an Assistive Technology seminar in Rochester. We assisted with the Diabetes Wellness Day and drove clients to a talk by the inspirational Eric Weihenmayer- a blind rock climber who successfully summited Mount Everest. Carol recently became a member of the newly formed Seacoast Advisory Committee. The group is committed to bringing awareness and opportunities for the New Hampshire Association for the Blind in the Greater Seacoast Area.

Volunteering for the New Hampshire Association for the Blind has been an “eye opening” experience. We are inspired by the pragmatism, courage and humor of the those who are visually impaired, and are thankful that we have had the opportunity to work with so many interesting individuals. Life is good .
